West wins!
Broomall (PA) - All-Star Games are often an interesting affair.  Sometimes the teams match-up so perfectly that the last team to score wins.  Other times, one team owns the tilt.  Unfortunately for the Eastern squad, the West owned the game on Friday night. The West opened up the game with a trifecta of DCCC scoring.  Pat Gardner tallied the game's first goal just over two minutes in.  Teammate Joey O'Neill showed some all-star flare with a "Michigan" goal two minutes later, and Gardner struck with his second shortly after Brian Bell (Cabrini) had cut the West lead in half.  The West doubled up the East in goals in the first, 6-3.  St. Joe's Chris Martin scored in between another O'Neill goal and a Collin Kellar (DCCC) score.  Kutztown's Ben Garvey had a solid outing in the game, and buried his first of two; West Chester's Steve Scavone also scored for the East in the first.

The second period saw the East switch goaltenders, with Jimmy Heisler (Drexel 1) taking over the reigns for Brian Smith (Drexel 2).  The West didn't show any more compassion, burying 7 goals in the period - three by Martin, two from Hawks teammate Mike Vitaliano, and two from Rowan's Jared Silber.  Ursinus goalie Matt Chorney was solid in between the pipes for the West, allowing a stingy single goal from Penn's Perry Clarkson.  Going into the third period, the West had a commanding 13-4 lead as the game looked like it might be getting out of hand.

While the final score was lopsided, the Eastern squad made it interesting, doubling their goal total in the third period.  Penn's Christian Hoogerheyde switched allianaces and manned the crease solidly for the West in the third, but found four different East players tally goals, included one each by Penn teammates Bob Johnson and Clarkson again.  Garvey and Bell had the other two for the East.  For the West, they had a slower period, "only" managing five goals.  Martin and Chuck VanFossen (Rowan) each had two in the period, and O'Neill had his third as well.

For his offensive output of 6 goals, St. Joe's Chris Martin was named the All-Star Game MVP.  The backstopping efforts of Ursinus' Mathew Chorney was worth of MVG (Most Valuable Goalie) honors.

This year's final score may have been 18-8, but the score belies the enjoyment of the event.  Thanks to the players, teams, fans and all that voted, came out, and participated in the game!!
