Regular season matchup:
St. Joe's won both games over Villanova 7-3 and 6-2
Championship matchup:
Villanova wins both games over SJU 7-2, 6-2
Game 1:
Villanova - 7, St. Joe's - 2
The Wildcats came out like gangbusters to start the series, scoring 30 seconds into the first period (Rich Kline, assisted by Ryan Hughes). The teams settled into a groove and went scoreless until the second when Hughes scored off of a Kline assist. Joona Karlsson would tally two more second period goals for the Wildcats, as the high-powered St. Joe's offense could not find a way to solve 'Cats goalie Kevin Stiles. Kline scored early in the third before St. Joe's managed to score on Stiles, with Jesse Stone and Chris Martin tallying a minute apart. Any chance of a Hawks comeback was squashed after Kline's third goal of the game. Anthony Famularo rounded out the scoring with a late goal to ensure the win.
Game 2:
Villanova - 6, St. Joe's - 2
The Hawks looked to knot up the series in Game 2, and to do so they would have to match the intensity that Nova came with in Game 1. And, for most of the first period, they did exactly that. John Hunter and John Pinto scored in the first period and it looked like the Hawks' potency had returned. However, Stiles had other ideas as the diminutive goalie shut the door on St. Joe's the entire rest of the game. From that point, it was all on the Nova skaters to provide enough offense. Nick Esposito buried a first period goal to cut the Nova lead in half. Ben Briston and Joona Karlsson would then combine for four goals (two each) in the second period. With a 5-2 lead, it was all academic from there on out. Shane Moran provided extra insurance in the third, as the Wildcats captured the 2009-2010 Brennan Cup.
