Villanova 2 bests CabriniMay 6th, 2014 at 1:25AM May 6th, 2014 2:35AM
The Tier II championship saw the #1 and #2 seeds square off for the title. Cabrini finished the season in first place, and had played more crossover games against Tier I teams. Villanova 2 finished in second place by one game behind the Cavs, with a more Tier II-heavy schedule.
On their way to the finals, Cabrini defeated West Chester in a very close 6-4 semifinal game. Villanova 2 had a slightly easier time, dispatching with Penn 2 by a 6-2 score. The two teams looked to be fairly evenly matched, with Cabrini winning the lone regular season match-up 8-6, and looking like a slight favorite.
The teams spent the first period of Game 1 feeling each other out, playing some tight hockey. Cabrini broke the scoreless tie with 6 minutes and change left in the first on a Nick Giusti goal, only to have Andy Caracciolo even things three minutes later for Nova. In the 2nd, Villanova exploded for three goals, to Cabrini's one. The two teams traded goals in the third, but Cabrini couldn't make up the second period difference, and ended up dropping game 1, 6-4.
Game 2 was a decidedly different story - specifically thanks to a moster game from Cabrini goalie Christopher Treat. The Wildcat netminder faced an onslaught 37 shots, and stopped all but one. With two goals each from Dan O'Rourke and Giusti, Cabrini sailed to a 4-1 win, and set up a deciding third game.
Playing their third game of the night, both Villanova and Cabrini were pushing themselves to the limit. The first period saw Villanova take a 3-1 lead into the final seconds. With only three seconds remaining Caracciolo scored the goal that would be the game and championship winner. Cabrini mounted a two goal comeback in the third, but goaltender Mike Zawisza closed the door beyond that. Villanova would close out Game 3 by a score of 5-3, and hoist their first Tier II championship trophy, and second PCRHL title in school history.
Congratulations to both teams, and to the Villanova University 2 team for their Tier II championship!
